Food TripIt was February 2018, and I had just recently transferred into Columbia College Chicago, and I was getting into my 2nd week of school. As I was looking to become more active in school, I checked out 2 clubs that caught my interest, and one of them was called Asian Student Organization, or ASO for short. I immediately felt at home with the club, and fast forward to March, they began asking artists to submit work for their annual showcase, which was called A2. This year's theme was called A2 + X, and focused on the intersections of one's life. I got to work.

The Process
Since the piece was personal, I didn't make any sketches for the piece, and went straight to creating (which is something I normally wouldn't do). When I thought about crossovers, I was inspired by the foods in my life, and focused on the foods from my childhood, and the foods I currently like; these were influenced by my culture, and also by my upbringing. For example, my father would often take my brother and I out to Taco Bell after going to my piano lessons, and I often enjoyed Filipino cuisine thanks to my family background, and these 2 experiences were the basis of my childhood, and what I think of when I think about food. As I got older, I began to really enjoy sushi and ramen, and I'd be lying if I said these Japanese foods weren't influenced by my love for Japanese media, specifically anime. Sushi began to become my number one food, and I had to add it for sure.
The Event
The event itself was held where the club typically met (which was not the original plan, but the show must go on!), and the event itself was a nice event full of nice people, alum members of the club, good food, and performances from people outside of the illustration and graphic design world I was used to- people acted, danced, and read poems, and it was a great event that showcased the many talents across Columbia College Chicago. Overall, I enjoyed the event, and I am looking forward to the next showcase!
Side Note: I changed the size of the piece last minute, so the piece ended up being double the size, and luckily they were flexible with the change!
